1955 wird der SS-Führer Franz Murer zurück nach Österreich überführt, wo er erst 1963 vor Gericht gestellt wird. Shoah-Überlebende reisen an, um gegen ihn auszusagen. Die Beweislast ist enorm. Unter Murers Kommando, der wegen seiner Grausamkeit als “Schlächter von Vilnius” bekannt war, wurden unzählige Tausend Juden und Jüdinnen ermordet. Der Prozess gerät zur Farce, Murer wird unter Beifall der Bevölkerung freigesprochen und wirkt bis zu seinem Tod 1994 als ÖVP-Funktionär in der Obersteiermark.

Murers Prozess, ein historischer Justizskandal, gilt in der Gegenwart als Symbol für die über Jahrzehnte gescheiterte Aufarbeitung im postnazistischen Österreich.

In 1955, SS-Officer Franz Murer is returned to Austria from the Soviet Union but is not trialed until 1963. Survivors of the Shoah travel to court, their testimonials contribute to the heavy burden of proof. Under Murers command, who was then known as the “Slaughterer of Vilnius” because of his cruelty, thousands of Jews had been murdered. Soon, the trial evolves into a farce. Murer is found not guilty and lives in upper Styria until his death in 1994, working as an official of the Austrian People’s Party.

The trial remains a symbol of post-nazistic Austria’s failure of dealing with the past.
