FESTIVALMOTTO 2023
Diverse and rich in contrast - from ultra-orthodox to permissively liberal, from militant to peace-moving - all this is Israel. The state was founded 75 years ago, on May 14, 1948. Since then it has been in the constant focus of world publicity: in relation to his domestic and foreign policy and his position in the Middle East, but also in relation to the numerous civil society peace initiatives and multiculturalism.
These aspects are reflected in almost all of the more than thirty feature, short and documentary films - most of them Austrian premieres - that will be shown at the "Vienna Jewish Film Festival 2023 - JFW 23".
The Israeli historian Tom Segev and the film director Amos Gitai will also deal with all these topics in lectures and panel discussions.
Segev, who will open JFW 23 on April 19, is known internationally for books such as “The Seventh Million”, “Once Upon a Time in Palestine”, “Simon Wiesenthal”, “David Ben-Gurion: A State at Any Price” or “Jerusalem Corner Berlin".

Although not an Israeli film festival, the JFW23 will of course take the Declaration of Independence into account and address its consequences.
The JFW 23 not only focuses on people, controversies and developments that shaped and shape the state of Israel and its society. It is just as important to the organizers of the festival to present initiatives that work against war and hostility and for a non-violent coexistence of religions, nationalities and ethnic groups.
And last but not least, cryptic comedy and humor once again play an important role in the festival.
Vielfältig, kontrastreich und divers - von ultraorthodox bis freizügig-liberal, von kämpferisch bis friedensbewegt – all das ist Israel. Vor 75 Jahren, am 14. Mai 1948, wurde der Staat gegründet. Seither steht er im ständigen Fokus der Weltöffentlichkeit: in Bezug auf seine Innen- und Außenpolitik und seine Position im Nahen Osten, aber auch bezüglich der zahlreichen zivilgesellschaftlichen Friedensinitiativen und der Multikulturalität.
Diese Aspekte spiegeln sich in fast allen der mehr als dreißig Spiel-, Kurz- und Dokumentarfilme - die meisten davon österreichische Erstaufführungen - , die beim „Jüdischen Filmfestival Wien 2023 - JFW 23“ zu sehen sein werden.
Mit all diesen Themen werden sich zudem auch der israelische Historiker Tom Segev und der Filmregisseur Amos Gitai bei Vorträgen und Podiumsgesprächen beschäftigen.
Segev, der am 19. April das JFW 23 eröffnet, ist durch Bücher wie „Die siebente Million“, „Es war einmal ein Palästina“, „Simon Wiesenthal“, „David Ben Gurion: Ein Staat um jeden Preis“ oder „Jerusalem Ecke Berlin“ international bekannt.
Amos Gitai spricht zu seinen Filmen „Rabin, the Last Day“ und „Laila in Haifa“.
Obwohl kein israelisches Filmfestival, wird das JFW23 selbstverständlich die Unabhängigkeitserklärung berücksichtigen und ihre Folgen thematisieren.
Im Fokus des JFW 23 stehen nicht nur Menschen, Kontroversen und Entwicklungen, die den Staat Israel und seine Gesellschaft prägten und prägen. Ebenso wichtig ist es den Gestalter:innen des Festivals, Initiativen vorzustellen, die sich gegen Krieg und Feindschaft und für ein gewaltfreies Miteinander von Religionen, Nationalitäten und Ethnien engagieren.
Und nicht zuletzt spielen auch diesmal wieder hintergründige Komödien und Humor eine wichtige Rolle im Festival.
