Sinai-Halbinsel, Juni 1967. Der Sechs-Tage-Krieg ist vorbei, der Waffenstillstand noch frisch. Wir folgen Gassan und Haled, zwei ägyptischen Soldaten, auf ihrem Weg Richtung Heimat. Ihre Odyssee durch die Wüste beinhaltet Begegnungen mit einem toten UN‑Soldaten (und dessen Whisky‑Vorrat), einem manischen britischen Sensationsreporter und ein Aufeinandertreffen mit drei israelischen Soldaten, welches eine imposante Interpretation des italienischen Klassikers Bandiera Rossa (dessen erste Strophe mit Avanti popolo anfängt) bietet, ebenso wie die unvergessliche Rezitation Haleds von Shylocks Monolog aus Shakespeares „Der Kaufmann von Venedig“: „Ich bin ein Jude. Wenn ihr uns stecht, bluten wir nicht?“

Rafi Bukais bitterschwarze Tragikomödie, die die Kriegswirren in ihrer ganzen Absurdität vorführt, gehört mittlerweile zum Kanon des israelischen Films.

/ Sinai, June 1967. The Six-Day-War is over, the ceasefire still fresh. We follow Gassan and Haled, two Egyptian soldiers, on their way back home. Their odyssey through the desert holds some surreal encounters with a dead UN-soldier (and his whiskey reserves), a manic British reporter and a group of Israeli soldiers that leads to an unprecedented interpretation of the Italian classic Bandiera Rossa (whose first strophe begins with Avanti popolo), as well as the unforgettable recitation of Shylock’s monologue from Shakespeare's „The Merchant of Venice“ by Haled. „I am a Jew. If you prick us, do we not bleed? “ Rafi Bukai’s black tragicomedy that displays the utter absurdity of war is considered to be among the most valuable Israeli films.
