Free Zone erzählt die Geschichte dreier Frauen: einer Amerikanerin, einer Israelin und einer Palästinenserin. Ihre Lebenswege kreuzen sich eines Tages, und die gemeinsame Reise führt in die „Free Zone“ zwischen Syrien, Jordanien und Israel.
Die beste Hoffnung für einen konstruktiven Dialog im Nahen Osten, so der Film, könnte in der Fähigkeit von Frauen aus allen Fraktionen liegen, politische und ideologische Unterschiede zu ignorieren und in der "Freizone" ihrer gemeinsamen Menschlichkeit zu kommunizieren.

The film's three main characters, all women, are an American (Ms. Portman), an Israeli (Hanna Laslo) and a Palestinian (Hiam Abbass) whose lives intersect. The best hope for a constructive dialogue in the Middle East, the movie suggests, may lie in the ability of women from every faction to ignore political and ideological differences and communicate in the "free zone" of their common humanity.    

Amos Gitai on the theme of the border: „ I see the film as offering a bridge…A bridge that would show that in the Middle East, you have to make use of little scraps of cooperation, and not necessarily concentrate on big ideas. Instead, we have to cling to the little daily events which bring people together.“
