Joseph Roths letzte, 1939 posthum erschienene Erzählung ist eine Parabel über den Alkoholismus und die Verlorenheit im Exil und trägt autobiographische Züge. Die bildgewaltige Filmadaption des italienischen Regisseurs wurde in Paris in englischer Sprache gedreht und vielfach ausgezeichnet.
